A short story of how and why Arjuna got the title of “Gudakesha”

Sanjay addresses Arjuna as Gudakesha during the war when he narrates the war to King Dhritarashtra. Here Gudakesha means “One who has conquered on his/her sleep and laziness”.

Sanjay Narrating War to King Dhritrashtra

Why Arjuna was called Gudakesha, because one evening when all the Pandava Brothers were having dinner and suddenly the candles were blown off and there was total darkness in the hut and then Arjuna realized that if his hand can reach his mouth perfectly even after total darkness and then he said to himself that if I am able to eat properly in the total darkness then I can even master my archery in the darkness.

“Arjuna”

He then started training in blindfolded archery, day and night without sleeping or resting, and mastered the form.

Thats how he was known as “Gudakesha”
